Well it’s time to get back on the road and we a couple long days ahead just before we go, closing up the house for while we are gone. It’s quite a list. Reset the sprinklers for the yard and ground water. Drain the hot tub, walk the perimeter of the house for anything needing our attention, empty and turn off the deep freezer and clean out the fridge. Set the thermostat to a moderate temperature, unplug the tv and appliances, most anything with power to be protected during a storm. Turn of the water heater. Make arrangements for our neighbor to check/pick up our mail. If you live in a community with HOA, you can pay your dues in advance. We just have them paid automatically. Ask neighbors to keep an eye out on the house. Give our neighbor a key to come and walk through once in a while. Put a few lights on timers. Make sure our disaster kit is easily accessible for a maintenance person, i.e. hurricane boards and supplies in our case. The last item is to call the utilities and put them on ‘vacation’ status for while we are gone.
